West Central District, Tainan City

West Central District is (as you might expect) west of East District.  It's also (again, as you might expect) north of South District.  It's as "downtown" as you can get in Tainan, and most (not all) of Tainan's major tourist attractions are to be found within this part of the city.

West Central District has been inhabited since (at least) the 1600s.  The first people living there were members of the Siraya Tribe.  After them came the Dutch, and after them came the Han Chinese.  Koxinga and his army later forced the Dutch out of the area in the same time period, and the rest, as we say, is history.

According to the last census, 74,859 people live in West Central District.

This is one of Tainan's two Far Eastern Department Stores.  It's a relatively easy walk from the Tainan Train StationThe other Far Eastern is in East District, on the other side of the train station.

To the west of the Tainan Train Station you'll find the Chikan Tower / Fort Provintia, one of Taiwan's most famous historic sites.  This place is hundreds of years old, and was built by the Dutch East India Company.

Their are many exhibits within explaining the site's long and distinguished history.  Just about every Taiwanese person has been here at least once.

Further west is Shennong Old Street, a very touristy place that's hard not to like.  If you enjoy cat-related trinkets this place is for you.

The lanterns add a lot of charm to this street.  There are also several bars, barbecues and other types of restaurants in the area.

On the other side of the district, much closer to Anping, is the Wusheng Night Market.  I'd planned on eating here, but arrived too early to do so.  Oh well, another day.  It gets super busy and I recommend against driving to this place.

The Anping Canal (or Grand Canal) is in the center of West Central District.  It's about as scenic as this part of Tainan gets.

I've spent the night around here a couple times.  It's an ideal location for those looking to spend a night on the town.

This?  This is just an old storefront they were tearing down on Minsheng Road.

The Hayashi Department Store, a relic of the Japanese Colonial Administration, is just south of here.  I like that place, but it's best avoided on weekends.

Many of the historic markers in West Central will lead you to temples like this one.  They're cool, but there sure are a lot of them.

Tainan might be the best city in Taiwan to see old, old trees growing out of old, old buildings.  To my surprise there were actually people living in the building to the left.

Alongside the Chikan Tower the Confucius Temple is another must-see historic site in Tainan.  Unlike other Confucius temples it seems to keep regular business hours.

This temple was built in 1665, and dates back to the reign of Koxinga's son.  It underwent several renovations during the Qing Dynasty, the Japanese Colonial Administration, and the current administration.  Most of what tourists see today dates back to 1917.

It's located near the Tainan Art Museum, the Tainan Museum of Fine Arts and the National Taiwan Literature MuseumThe Tainan City Museum is also in the vicinity. .

A bomb!  The Japanese left this in front of Zhongyi Elementary School.  Scholars are uncertain as to what their reasons for doing so were.

Lastly there's the Tainan Museum of Fine Arts mentioned above.  I'm not a big fan of art museums, but it's here for those who are.  If you ask me this place needs more trees.

Niaosong District, Kaohsiung City

Niaosong is north of Daliao, Fengshan and Sanmin.

"Niaosong" is another name for the Japanese superb fig tree.  According to Wikipedia there was once a large specimen in the area under which "travelers and merchants would rest."

According to the last census, 43,535 people live in Niaosong.

Between Cheng Shiu University and Chengqing (Chengcing) Lake you'll find the Niaosong Wetland Park.  It's small and easy to walk around.  It's an excellent place for bird watching.

Chengqing Lake is Niaosong's defining feature.  The lake is on the west side of the district, across the road from Chang Gung Hospital.

The "Nine Turns Bridge" is the most famous thing on Chengqing Lake.  It's not far from the main entrance.  The buildings on the other side of the lake are in Central Niaosong.

The western half of the lake is a recreation area, while the eastern half is bordered by a busy road.  Walking around the lake is possible, but walking along its eastern shore is somewhat unpleasant.

There's a nice barbecue area at the north end of the lake, and not far from this barbecue area is the Kaohsiung Green Park, a newer park reclaimed from a former golf course.

I recommend visiting in the morning.  Around noon the area tends to smog over, making the park less scenic.

Chengqing Lake has a long history.  It was originally a pond used for the irrigation of local farms.  The Japanese later began using the lake's water for industrial purposes, and also built water treatment facilities along the shoreline.  It was given the name "Chengqing" by none other than Chiang Kai-shek, who had a residence built on the shore.  This residence, the "Chengqing Lake Guesthouse," is open to tourists.

There are many side trails leading away from the main route around the lake.  The park next to the lake is kept scrupulously clean.  One gets the feeling that people take a great deal of pride in this place, perhaps owing to its long history.

This trail leads to the Yuanshan Hotel (or "Kaohsiung Grand Hotel").  What's that, you say?  Another Yuanshan Hotel?  Yes, there are two of them, and other one's in Kaohsiung on Chengqing Lake.

Some of the hotel decorations are interesting.  I'd like to stay here sometime, though I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap.

I'd never heard about this place before stumbling upon it.  It's very similar to the one in Taipei.

This is the view from the front of the hotel.  That's Sanmin District in the background.

There's memorabilia for sale in the lobby, and you can even rent items of "historic" clothing in the gift shop.

Sure, this place did remind me of "The Overlook Hotel" from The Shining, and everybody's heard about ghosts haunting the Taipei hotel, but I haven't heard of any paranormal activity in the Kaohsiung branch.

Near the main entrance is the visitor's center.  There's not much inside, just a bored-looking worker and some exhibits discussing the history of local tap water.

This is the main gate.  It's a tourist site in itself.  The first time I visited I walked all the way here from Zhengyi Train Station, way down in Sanmin District.  Driving here on my second visit was much easier.

And this?  This is a pineapple field on the other side of Niaosong, not far from the ridge separating this district from Dashu.  Driving through the eastern half of Niaosong is not fun, though it is a good place to buy cheap furniture.  We bought a living room couch around here several years ago.

NOTE: Chengqing Lake also has its own aquarium, the Ocean Fantasy Museum, but I wouldn't recommend it.  The Chengqing Lake Baseball Stadium, where the TSG Hawks play, is also in the area.  I'm hoping to see a game there this summer.

East District, Tainan City

East District is east of South District, north of Rende and southwest of Yongkang.  It's on the other side of the train tracks from the rest of downtown Tainan, and thus less accessible for most tourists.

Despite its proximity to so many historic sites, East District was sparsely populated up until the Japanese occupation of Taiwan in the late 1800s, and for this reason there aren't as many historic sites in East District as there are in nearby West Central and Anping districts.  Much of East District's residential character is a byproduct of the Jungshan (#1) Freeway, which was completed in the 1970s.  Prior to that East District was more a combination of military barracks, farms and factories.

According to the last census, 180,118 people live in East District.

The first stop for many people visiting East District (or Tainan in general) is the Tainan Train Station.  This train station is a very old building constantly under construction.  Oh, and it's surrounded by legions of sketchy individuals, so be careful around here at night.  I run into weirdies every time I pass through this place.

From the front entrance you can get an idea of how old the train station is.  It dates back to the Japanese Colonial Administration, and around the time of its (initial) construction it was a very modern facility.

I've heard they plan on digging a tunnel and moving the train tracks underground.  Great idea IF they can finish this project quickly.  Unfortunately very few things in Tainan seem to get built quickly, or within their budgets, or with the efficiency seen in other parts of Taiwan.

A little way up Beimen Road is the Tainan Culture and Creative Park.  This building also dates back to Japanese times.  There's a Starbucks inside, and a nice garden in the back.

This is the other half of the Culture and Creative Park.  Didn't seem to be open when we were there.

This is the view of the train tracks from behind the Culture and Creative Park.  That's Chenggong University on the other side.  This university is one of Taiwan's most famous institutions.

Still further up Beimen Road is Big King Supermarket, an importer of goods from the Philippines, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.  I highly recommend giving it a look.

This was the first time I actually walked into Chenggong University.  For whatever reason the thought never occurred to me before.

It seems like a nice place to study.  It's most famous feature is probably its collection of banyan trees, of which the school has many.

"Cheng Keng Lake" (more like "Cheng Keng Pond") is inside the school campus.

There's also the Little East Gate, complete with remnants of the old city wall and a couple cannons.  This gate dates back to the Qing (Ching) Dynasty.

To the south of the university are hundreds of small restaurants along dozens of small streets.  We bought Vietnamese sandwiches around here and they were very good.

The Xizhuwei Hills Cultural and Creative Park is south of the university and southeast of the train station, on the other side of the train tracks.  There isn't much here for tourists.

Nearby is the Magistrate Residence Living Center.  The Japanese royal family would stay here during their visits to Taiwan, and the building has been lovingly restored.

The interior is more of shop however.  In their zeal to display every possible type of cup, plate and pot for sale, the proprietors of this establishment seem to have lost sight of its historical significance.  There are a few placards explaining its history, but it's hard to get a sense of this history from a table burdened with tableware that doesn't match.

I believe this is Minzu Road.

Xizhuwei again.  We walked by it twice.  This part is more a set of artists' studios, all of which seem to be open at different times.

On the way back to the train station we passed by the FE21.  I almost never visit this department store due to its location.  Either of the two Shin Kong Mitsukoshis?  Sure, many times.

And that's it for East District, or at least the northern third or so.  I didn't venture any further south than that.  There's not much for tourists south of Qingnian Road.
