Fengshan District, Kaohsiung City

Fengshan is west of Daliao, north of Xiaogang, and east of Qianzhen, Lingya and Sanmin.  The Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line runs right through it, with stops at Weiwuying*, Fengshan (Fongshan) West, Fengshan (Fongshan), Dadong and Fengshan (Fongshan) Middle School.  It also has its own train station and two of the LRT stops, Kaisyuan Wuchang and Kaisyuan Ersheng, are on the border between Lingya and Fengshan.

Fengshan is home to one of Kaohsiung's two "old cities," fortified encampments/military bases set up in what is now Kaohsiung during the Qing (Ching) Dynasty.  Fengshan's old city was moved to the area from Zuoying, and what's left of it consists of scattered historic sites that won't be immediately obvious to the average traveler.

According the last census, 359,579 people live in Fengshan.  It's the most densely populated district in Kaohsiung.

This is the Fengshan Train Station.  Kinda cool, right?  It was remodeled not long ago to reflect some of the area's history.  If you're in the area with time to kill, there's a Big ("Mega") PX Mart within walking distance.

On the east side of Fengshan, not far from Daliao, is the Fengshan Junior High School MRT Station.  You'll notice a lot of phoenixes in the Fengshan MRT stops.  The "Feng" 鳳 in Fengshan means "phoenix."

Huangpu Park is between the Fengshan JHS MRT Station and the Dadong MRT Station.  There isn't much in this area for tourists.

Closer to Dadong you'll find the Dongbian Gate (or Tongyi Gate) a remnant of the "New City" built here during the Ching (Qing) Dynasty.  Many scooter riders use the bridge as a shortcut, and pedestrians should exercise caution.

Along the same canal you'll find the Dadong Arts Center.  I didn't go inside, too many museums lately.  Another day!

It looks cool from the front, however.

Across the road is Dadong Park, the largest park in Fengshan.

This is the entrance to the park.  I didn't go as far in as the "wetlands," but I have the feeling that half is more attractive than the half near the Arts Center. .

Near the Fengshan MRT Station you'll find more Ching (Qing) Dynasty relics like this canon emplacement.  Not far from here is the Fengyi Academy, an old "schoolhouse" used during the same time period.  I have mixed feelings about the Fengyi Academy.  On the one hand I think it offers a good introduction to what an upper class education looked like back then, on the other hand I find the newer, Instagram-friendly statues installed there somewhat gaudy.

This pool is near the canon emplacement.  It's a good area for a stroll.

This cute garden is between the emplacement and the Tsaogong (Caogong) Temple.

The Zhonghua (Junghua) Street Night Market is in the same area.  I've never been here when it's in full swing, but I have the feeling that I'd like a lot of the food.

They're building a MASSIVE LaLaport Shopping Center right next to the Fengshan West MRT Stop, so those traveling through this area in the future might want to keep an eye out for it.

And any discussion of Fengshan should include the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts in Weiwuying.  This building is still in the running for "Kaohsiung's weirdest-looking," even though it's not as new or as surprising as it once was.

At the time of our visit they were gearing up for some kind of "mother tongue festival."  It looked like it was going to be quite an event.

Behind the Arts Center is the Weiwuying Metropolitan Park, which was previously discussed in the Lingya entry.  This park is divided between the two districts.

And from here, just a short walk away, is the Weiwuying MRT Station.  By this point we'd crossed the district from east to west, and it was time to go home, rest our feet, and live to fight another day.

*Weiwuying MRT Station is actually in Lingya, but since walking a few steps down to the nearby arts center brings you into Fengshan I figure it's close enough.
