Gaoshu Township, Pingtung County

Gaoshu Township is north of Yanpu and east of Ligang.  It's bordered by the Laonong and Ailiao rivers.  To the east of Gaoshu is Sandimen Township, where the mountains begin.

According to the last census 22,872 people live in Gaoshu.

Like Wanluan Township further south, Gaoshu is shaped like a triangle, with its longest side running from north to south.  These trees are near the bottom corner of the triangle, not far from where Yanpu, NeipuMajia, Sandimen and Gaoshu come together.

The same spot, looking south.

Further north, along the Mountainside Highway (185) is the Daluguan resort and amusement park.

This is the resort.  We briefly considered staying here, but changed our minds after we learned how much it costs.

We also considered the "amusement park," which is really more of a campground.  The amusement park charges an entrance fee, a parking fee, and there are no food or drinks available inside.  After speaking to the lady at the ticket booth we offered a polite "Thanks, but no thanks" and kept driving.

Further north, on the Koushe River.

One of the three famous (?) stone lions in Old Daluguan.  This one is by far the cutest.

And here's his friend...

..and here's the "older lion," as some people refer to it.  For more background on these lions refer to the Discover Pingtung: Truly Loving Pingtung 4 entry.

They grow a lot of taro north of Old Daluguan.

This is at the northern end of the township, or the "top of the triangle," on the Laonong and Zhuokou rivers,.  If you keep going north you'll be in Kaohsiung's Maolin Scenic Area.

We found this cat sleeping in Dajin Village, across from the Weiliao Trailhead.  Like Maolin, this trailhead is extremely popular.

Southwest of Dajin, along the Laonong River, is the Xinfeng Water Park. I think most kids would love this place.

Same spot, looking across to Liugui District in Kaohsiung.

We had lunch in Central Gaoshu.  Pig's feet, spinach and some other things.

This temple seems to be the center of town.  Central Gaoshu is surprisingly busy.

The Chinese text below was taken from "Discover Pingtung: Truly Loving Pingtung" 發現屏東 -- 真愛屏東 , published by 中央研究院民族學研究所圖書館 in 2003.  The Chinese text was written by 蘇義峰 and the English was written by me.

I'll be translating parts of six chapters from this book this semester.  These chapters will correspond to the six townships in Pingtung I'll be visiting during this time period.

Gaoshu Township
The Scent of Pineapple and Taro, Stone Lions Protecting the Land (1)

Daluguan's Stone Lions

The area between Guanfu Village and Guangxing Village stood between [the Chinese settlements further south] and the the Shanzhumao Settlement [an aboriginal community] during the Qing Dynasty.  This area was also referred to as Daluguan during the same time period.  The camp for the South Road Yingdu Division was also here.

There are three stone lions altogether.  The colorful stone lion next to the Shuntian Temple plaza was sculpted by the master Li Da-song in Wanluan Township in 1970, and installed in its present location on the 29th day of the second lunar month in 1971. (2)

The First Stone Lion

"The Inaugural Lion" has become Daluguan's protective spirit.  It's about 165 years old.  Around 146 years ago flash floods struck the village in the midst of the rainy season, and as a result this lion was buried under [soil carried into the village by the floodwaters] for many years.  One day a large truck stalled on the spot where the stone lion was buried.  Upon further investigation the stone lion's head was discovered beneath the truck, incense was burned and prayers were offered, and the truck was then able to move from the spot.  On the 9th of September 1984 the stone lion was dug up and placed to the left of Shuntian Temple for everyone to worship.

The Second Stone Lion

The second stone lion is no longer considered holy.  It has been placed in a betel nut grove on Shanghe Road, between Guangfu Village and Guangxing Village.

The Third Stone Lion

The third stone lion is very colorful and cute.  It has been placed between Guangfu Village and Guangxing Village on Shanghe Road.  It's in front of a betel nut grove. (3)

Every natural disaster that has befallen Guangfu Village has come from the east.  For this reason all three stone lions face east. (4)

Zhong Li-he's Old House

Zhong Li-he was born in Pingtung County, Gaoshu Township in 1915.  At the age of 18 he moved with his father to Meinong [in Kaohsiung] to run a farm.  As a young man he aspired to be a painter but failed in the attempt, though later on he became a famous writer.  Later still he met and fell in love with Ms. Zhong Ping-mei.  At that time couples with the same family names could not be married, so the two left their homes and fled to Northeast China.

The two finally returned to Taiwan after KMT rule was established on the island.  After coming back to Taiwan Zhong Li-he taught at Neipu Junior High School, but by that time he'd contracted pneumonia and long-term medical treatment exhausted his family's fortune.  He never lost his love of literature however, and he dedicated the remainder of his life to the writing of many classic works.  In 1960 his illness returned and claimed his life.

Discover Pingtung: Agricultural Goods

Wax Apples

Gaoshu's "black diamond" wax apple is very sweet, very nutritious, and is deep red in color.  It has received many awards in local competitions and is the best variety of wax apple.

Papaya

Gaoshu's papayas are all cultivated using netting.  The fruits are medium-sized, beautiful to look at and very sweet.  They have thick flesh and are bright red.  They are the most important local agricultural product.

The "sweet winter pineapple," "sweet pineapple" and "perfumed pineapple" varieties of the fruit can all be found in Gaoshu.  These fruits are high quality, with a thin skin, fine fibrous texture and they are extremely soft and crisp.  They are very sweet and delicious.

Taro

The large taro cultivated in Gaoshu are sweeter because of the sweetness of the "Taishan Spring."  Not only do the taro stems grow taller but the tuber produced is very hard and of high quality.  This type of taro is the preferred ingredient for Jiaxian taro cakes and iced taro dessert.

1. I skipped the introduction.

2. I skipped the inscriptions on the temple relating to the lions.

I'm not all that clear what the "Shanzhumao Incident" was about, but apparently it involved an aboriginal community that the Qing authorities weren't happy with.  The army division was placed in Daluguan to keep them in check after they rose up against the government.  This happened in 1728.

3. Both the second and third lions are in front of the same betel nut grove.  The third lion is in front of the second, and since the writing of this book a small park has been created around them.

4. I skipped a section on a waterfall.  This waterfall might have disappeared or adopted another name, I'm not sure which.  Whichever the case this waterfall, if it's still there, is in Sandimen Township, not Gaoshu.

5. The Brix Scale is used to measure how much sugar a given fruit or vegetable contains.  "13 brix" means that a fruit is 13% sugar.  Most fruits and vegetables fall between 12 and 18 brix.

Yanpu Township, Pingtung County

Yanpu Township is north of Changzhi and east of both Jiuru and Ligang.  It's on the Ailiao River.

The "yan" in Yanpu means "salt."  Legend has it that the first Chinese settlers to arrive in the area traded ten carts' worth of salt for the land they farmed.

According to the last census, 24,080 people live in Yanpu.

This is on the former site of the Taisugar Pasture, now known as Shuangxin Park.  They once raised silkworms here.  Now it's just a quiet park in the middle of fields.

This sad bulldozer is parked next to another bygone tourist site, the "Big Ostrich Recreational Farm."  They still keep some ostriches on the premises, but there's nothing here for tourists.

A slightly more viable tourist destination is the Old Ye Family Residence, not far from the Ailiao River.

I've seen many of these old residences, and I have to say that the Old Ye Family Residence is worth visiting.  Some of its architectural details are interesting.

It hasn't been kept in the best condition, however.  I couldn't tell if its present condition was due to general neglect or the recent typhoon.

To the east is the Ailiao Riverside Trail.  The view from here across the river toward Gaoshu and Sandimen isn't bad.

A warning though, the bicycle trails in this area are not well-maintained.

The village to the west of the park has a nice temple.

As you travel east towards Gaoshu the land slowly rises up to meet the mountains.

This is also on the Ailiao River, but further northwest.

And last of all is Central Yanpu, the busiest part of the township by far.  ...not that you can tell from this market, which was closed for the day.

Tina and Billy Were Looking for Water

1. Who is in the story?

I am.  There are also many recurring characters.  My family, friends, strangers and occasional enemies appear, disappear and reappear within the story.  Locations change, and as the story progresses I grow appreciably older.  I wonder what percentage of this story I've been asleep?  Alone?  Angry?  Afraid?

Perhaps a short biography is in order.  Hi, my name is _____ and I'm _____ years old.  I'm married with two grown daughters.  One of these daughters lives in Taipei while the other lives in Kaohsiung.

I've lived in Taiwan over a period of 23 years, though I went back to the States for graduate school between 2003 and 2004 (about two years), and later went back to work in 2008 when the American economy was in the toilet.  I first moved to Taiwan in 1999, just after I graduated from the University of Washington.  Everybody asks me why I moved to Taiwan, and I never have any clear answer to this question.

At this point in the story I work at two different public schools in Hengchun Municipality, at the end of the Hengchun Peninsula, in Pingtung County, Taiwan.  If you happen to be viewing a map of Taiwan I'm not too far from the "little feet" at the southern end of the island.  The house where I live is 10-15 minutes north of Kenting.

I struggle to define my own personality.  I could list things I like (old science fiction novels, beer, swimming, snakes and American football), or I could list things I don't like (excessive rain, milk, hiking, monkeys and basketball), but I don't think that doing so brings anyone any closer to who I am as a person.  I can be quiet or talkative in equal measure, outgoing or introverted depending on the situation.  You could say the same about anybody.

2. Where and when does the story take place?

For the first 25 years of my life most of this story took place between Seattle, Washington and Bay City, Oregon, just north of Tillamook.  I was born in West Seattle, in a hospital that later burned down.  Up until the age of 6 my mother and I divided our time between Seattle, where she rented a house, and Bay City, where my grandmother lived up until her death in the 90s.

Around the time I turned 6 my mother married my stepfather, a man I've always considered my father without the "step."  After her marriage my mother and I moved from West Seattle to my stepfather's house in Greenwood, also in Seattle.  I lived in Greenwood until I was 19, and from the ages of 19 to 25 I lived in a variety of rented spaces in and around Seattle.

At the age of 25 I moved to Taiwan.  Since then I've lived in Taichung, Hsinchu, Taitung, Fangliao and Hengchun.  My longest residence during this time was the 13 years I spent in Taitung.  For this reason Taitung is the place my daughters think of as home, in much the same way as I regard Seattle as home.  Are our homes ever really our homes though?  And for how long?

A more interesting question is where and when this story will take place in the future.  If you're asking me today I'll say that it will probably continue to take place in Hengchun next school year, though beyond that I have no idea.  We'll see?

3. What happens at the beginning of the story?

If someone were taking a novelistic approach to this story I suppose they'd go all the way back, to the beginning of the universe, and from there progress to the formation of our star and the planets that make up our solar system.  They'd then offer an overview of Earth's development over geologic time, and from that point transition into my birth in Seattle several decades ago.

Or, in genealogical terms, the history of my family could be traced back to wherever the hell they came from in North America and/or Europe, and while that was being done the author could paint a vast picture of religious movements, technological developments and pop culture over hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Or the author could just start with the day I was born.  I can't discuss the day I was born, however, because I don't remember anything about it.

4. What happens in the middle of the story?

The average life expectancy for a man in the United States is 77.28 years.  The average life expectancy for a man in Taiwan is 76.63 years.  Given that I'm a North American man who's spent almost half his life in Taiwan let's average the two and get 76.96 years.

So assuming that I live to be 76.96 years old, 38.48 years of age was halfway through my life.  At that age I was living in Taitung, my daughters were ages 8 and 13, and in comic book movie terms Iron Man 3 hit theaters not long before.  I remember it being a good time in my life.  I was feeling secure in my job, I had enough money, and there was always something going on.

I was, by the way, already writing this blog then.  You're welcome to look here if you're interested.

5. What happens at the end of the story?

Is death the end?  That's a big question.  I apologize if you haven't had your morning cup of coffee yet.  We all know it's coming for us, even though we don't usually like to think about it.  Let's just say that I'm not a religious person, even if I do have some philosophical thoughts on the matter.

A more interesting (and possibly less depressing) question is what the world will be like in the 2050s (or, if I should live so long), the 2060s.  Will Taiwan and China still be at odds?  With both still exist as the same political entities?  Will we have learned from past mistakes?  Or will we continue to wallow in them?

I certainly don't have any answers.  My feeling (and this is only a feeling) is that countries (and people) that think more about the future tend to live longer.

6. What might this story teach us?

I think people have a certain myopia about death, in that they often view how someone died as the defining characteristic of their life.  A man dies in a terrorist attack and we regard him as a martyr, a woman dies in a freak boating accident and we regard her as foolhardy.  We often blame or praise people for how they died, probably because we're looking to either avoid or embrace the same fate.

The thing is, life can be LONG, and finding "a moral in the story" is often an act of oversimplification.  It also tends to diminish the person spoken of, who was just as multidimensional as you or I.  Maybe, for example, the man who died in the terrorist attack also molested young boys, or maybe the woman who died in the freak boating accident left behind an astonishing amount of money to family members.   There are many sides to any story, and personalities are always changing over time.

This said, the manner of my inevitable death will probably define me for those who survive it.  People will look at how I died and come to conclusions about what kind of person I was, and whether or not certain of my character traits were desirable.  In the end your identity is like a gift -- or a curse -- you give to those who outlive you.  After your death it is they who control your narrative, and they who draw morals from your story.

But, barring that kind of conclusion, and assuming that the reader finishes my story before I myself have finished it, what kind of moral(s) or lesson(s) do I hope they draw from my exploits?

This question I can answer:

1) Always have a backup plan, and

2) Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do something.

And what about you?  Who is in your story?  Where and when does the story take place?  What happens in the beginning of the story?  What happens in the middle of the story?  What happens at the end of the story?  What might this story teach us?

Yanpu Township
A Land Changed by Salt and the Legend of the Ailiao River (1)

The Himalayan Ash Road

In front of Yanpu Junior High there's a row of Himalayan Ash trees.  This is the only road of Himalayan Ash trees in Pingtung County, and for this reason it is an important scenic spot.

Yanpu Township has a flower distribution and sales cooperative center, and there are flower gardens all over Yanpu.  You could even say the entire township specializes in flowers.

Aside from the flower industry, Yanpu's agricultural sector has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.  This agricultural sector has benefited from the flow of water from the Ailiao and Gaoping rivers over the fan-shaped plain that comprises the township, which has made the soil there favorable for farming. (2)

The Ye Family Nanyang Hall

Yanpu Township is like many other riverside townships in that there are still many exquisite Minnanese (Taiwanese)-style buildings preserved there.  The Ye Family Nanyang Hall, which is located in the heart of Yanpu Township, is over 80 years old and is a well-maintained example of this type of building.

Discovering Pingtung: Agricultural Goods

Most of Yanpu's residents are engaged in agriculture.  In the past the primary crop was rice, while in recent years changes in government agricultural policies have seen a switch to other crops.  Crops now include edible red sugarcane, wax apples, soybeans, peanuts, sugarcane, jujubes, mangoes, vegetables with shorter growing seasons, flowers and other bulk crops.

The mangoes grown east of Gaolang Village are very colorful due to the air currents that pass through the township, and demand for these mangoes has grown dramatically.  Yanpu wax apples are comparable to the "black pearl" wax apples grown in Linbian.  They're harvested over a 600 hectare area and are the most important fruit in Yanpu.  Flower gardens cover 30 hectares, and most of these flowers are shipped to the Binjiang Flower Market in Taipei.  Better known flowers grown locally include the white ginger lily, the bluebell, the orchid, the rose and the bird of paradise.

Orchids of the Oncidium Genus

The Oncidium orchid is also known as the dancing orchid.  It hasn't been cultivated in Taiwan for very long.  As its petals open it resembles a group of dancing girls, and the colors displayed by the blooming flowers vary greatly.  It is sold in many floral stalls, it is a popular potted plant and it is widely used in floral arrangements.  It has become a national favorite, and also the third most exported cut flower after the butterfly orchid and the gladiolus.

White Ginger Lilies

White ginger lilies are native to Southeast Asia, and have been cultivated in Taiwan for many years.  In appearance they resemble butterflies fluttering, and for this reason they are also called white butterfly flowers.  White ginger lilies look fresh and beautiful, and they contribute a unique flavor to cooked dishes.  The Yanzhong Community Development Association in Yanpu Township, Pingtung County has indicated that Yanpu Township is presently the primary cultivation site for wild ginger lilies.  They have confirmed through Daren Technical College that these flowers are indeed edible.  After receiving this confirmation the Yanzhong Community Development Association developed a series of wild ginger lily recipes which include cold ginger lily, stir fried ginger lily with ham, fried ginger lily, Cantonese-style steamed ginger lily with meat and other dishes.  All of these dishes have a unique flavor.
