Ligang Township, Pingtung County

Ligang is north of Jiuru Township.  It's divided into two parts* by the Erchong River, which flows into the Gaoping (Kaoping) River to the southwest.

Ligang has more history than Jiuru.  This history is quite involved, and includes conflict between ethnic groups, political dissent and family sagas.  Ligang grew to prominence as a river port during the Qing Dynasty.  Back then goods were floated down the river from Ligang to Donggang** further south.

According to the last census 25,667 people live in Ligang.

Wonton soup and pig's feet seem to be the main reasons tourists visit Ligang.  There's a cluster of these restaurants on Highway 3 in Central Ligang.

The view around the corner, looking south toward Jiuru.

While we were there we ate at this place.  The food was good but definitely not great.

Some of their menu items.  The restaurants around here aren't expensive.

The view north along Highway 3.  Aside from wonton soup and pig's feet there's not much else in Ligang.  It's can be a very dry and dusty place in the summer.

North of Central Ligang we crossed the river and headed east.  There's a rough road along the river leading to Meinong District in Kaohsiung.

Same spot, looking in the other direction.

The main industry around here seems to be scooping the riverbed into trucks, and transporting the rocks and sand thus collected to nearby cement plants.  This "hill" started out as a pile of rocks and sand brought over from the river.

Some of the hills in this area look a bit evil.

As in Jiuru to the south, many farmers Ligang grow bananas.

As you go east the land grows more and more barren, with the area near the eastern edge of the township resembling a moonscape.

To the northwest, at the other end of Highway 3 as it enters Qishan District***, it's much greener.

*: There are actually three (or more) parts to this township if you refer to a map, but there's not much on the third part, which borders Gaoshu Township.  The river system is also a little more complicated than stated above.

**"New" or "old" Donggang?  Or both?  I'm really not sure.  I know that Donggang was moved from its initial location due to flooding during the same time period.  I assume the river trade continued after it was moved.

***I'm pretty sure the sign on Highway 3 says "Meinong District," but Google Maps disagrees.

NOTE 1: Interested in venomous snakes?  They see a lot of them around Ligang and Jiouru, or more generally in the districts and townships between north Pingtung County and eastern Kaohsiung.  There's a YouTube channel that broaches the topic if you're interested.

NOTE 2: Not trying to get too down on Ligang, but no, I'm not fond of the area.  I've been through it a few times since I started living in Pingtung, and it's probably my least favorite part of the county.  There isn't much there, it's not a convenient transit point, and I dislike the dry, dusty air that blows through the place when it's hot.
