2. The article doesn't state their complaints in detail.  I imagine it has a lot to do with how land in the area is zoned and possible subsidies resulting from the presence of this solar power storage facility, also impacts it would have on their quality of life.  This facility is part of the central government's strategy to make Taiwan less reliant on nuclear power and fossil fuels, but it seems to me that a lot of the private companies contracted to realize this project are only in it for the money, and both environmental concerns and a realistic appraisal of the efficacy of solar power went out the window a long time ago.

They've denuded half a mountainside north of where I live, in Checheng Township, for the sake of solar panels.  My eyes hurt every time I go up there.

3. Kaohsiung's power grid seems to be failing.  This problem is especially apparent in Nandze, where the Export Processing Zone is located.  One day they're blaming a local factory, another day they're blaming old wires, another day the weather.  Whatever the ultimate cause, these outages seem to be increasingly common in Kaohsiung, and I can only hope that someone in the local government is pushing for infrastructure projects that will really fix the problem.  As it is they seem to be patching the system back together every time an outage occurs.

4. The article goes on to discuss how pretty one of the officers is.  This strikes me as sexist bullshit so I didn't include it above.

5. "Shrimp fishing place."  If you've lived in Taiwan you'll know exactly what I'm talking about, if you're reading this outside of Taiwan, with no experience living here, you might be scratching your head.  These are businesses which keep a large indoor pool of shrimp.  Customers pay a fee and fish for the shrimp.  Many of these places, including the one referenced in the article, double as KTVs.
