Kaohsiung in the News 高雄的新聞 (East 東) 9


There are 38 districts in Kaohsiung City.  The districts discussed here are all east of the Formosa Freeway (#3).  They're much more rural than districts west of the Formosa Freeway, have a much lower population density, and are generally more scenic. 高雄市分為38個行政區 。  這裡文章討論的行政區都位在福爾摩沙高速公路以東 ，  這些行政區和高速公路以西的行政區比較起來: 較鄉下 、人口密度較低 、風景比較好。



1a. There was a fire at an old house (one of the more traditional, three-sided courtyard types built of brick).  A 91 year old man died at the scene. 高雄田寮三合院火警 !  91歲翁命喪火窟成焦屍 (1)

1b. A forest fire started in Tianliao spread to nearby Neimen and Shanlin districts.  It took firefighters six hours to extinguish the blaze. 高雄田寮山林大火  今晨撲滅無人受傷

9a. A special taxi service was recently launched in Taoyuan and surrounding districts.  This taxi service was created to meet the transportation needs of those living on or near Highway 20, which passes through Taoyuan on its way to Taitung. 高雄市桃源區幸福共享高雄GO正式啟動

9b. A group of students from Taoyuan Junior High climbed to the top of Little Guan Mountain, one of Taiwan's 100 highest peaks, as part of an educational/cultural excursion. 高市桃源登小關山  夜宿分享心境

1a. Moon World in Tianliao will host a hot air balloon festival during both this weekend and the weekend following.  On the weekend after that this hot air balloon festival will move to the Love River in downtown Kaohsiung. 2025高雄愛 , 月熱氣球 (1)

1b. This is kinda fun.  Kaohsiung's various districts were ranked by average age of homes, and Tianliao ranked dead last, at 54.54 years old.  The "youngest" district is Renwu, where homes are on average 23.88 years old. 高雄市平均屋齡逾34年  仁武區23.88年最年輕



2a. After a local company was found guilty of illegally dumping waste on land in Qishan a cleanup was ordered by the EPA.  The backfill required for this project consists of nearly a million metric tons.  After several delays and an appeal by the responsible company, the cleanup process is now underway and proceeding ahead of schedule.  It should be completed next year. 旗山大林段轉爐石回填案  陳其邁上任後清理進度超前

2b. Qishan residents living along Guangqi Road are blaming the Kaohsiung City Government over a failure to keep a ditch/canal alongside the road clear of dirt, plants and other debris. 旗山廣吉路水溝泥沙雜草淤積超過一年未清 ... (2)

3a. Allegations of vote buying surfaced after a recent round of elections within the Neimen District Farmer's Association.  The incident is under investigation by the Qiaotou District Prosecutor's Office, and several individuals were arrested following the election. 內門區農會選舉爆賄選  檢調搜索帶回10餘人3人交保 (3)



4a. Another case presented to the Qiaotou District Prosecutor's Office (a body which seems to handle most of the legal actions pertaining to Kaohsiung's mountain districts), is the illegal mining of sand and gravel in Meinong, and also the illegal dumping of construction waste in that area.  Many of those involved in the illegal mining have been arrested and fined, but the number of people implicated is high, and seems to extend upwards into the local government.  It's all very, very gangster-y. 高雄 "美濃大峽谷" 爭議發生什麼事 ?  非法盜採 , 濫倒廢棄物還牽扯地方政治問題 ? (4)



5a. Landslide preparedness drills were conducted in Xinzhuang Community. 杉林新庄社區土石流防災順練  強化避災能力



6a. Construction has begun on a new administrative center in Liouguei.  The building presently in use as an administrative center is very old and unsafe.  This project should be completed next year. 高市六龜新行政中心工程  預計115年第一季啟用

6b. A section of Highway 27 was closed in advance of the recent typhoon.  The main worry was rockslides which might occur along that stretch of road. 高雄市六龜區台27線11K+500 - 24K+500...

6c. Liouguei's fire department coordinated with supermarkets and other local stores to set up "disaster response sections."  And yes, most of the "disaster response items" happen to be instant noodles. 六龜消防隊協同賣場設置  "防災專區" 便利民眾整備

1. Hot air balloons on the Love River?  I'm not sure how that's going to work.  The website offers no details.

2. Seems like a mountain being made out of a molehill, and I'm wondering why they're blaming the Kaohsiung City Government and not the local district office.  I'm not familiar with "Taiwan News" (台灣好報), and this article may represent some kind of political attack.

3. Google dates this article at five days before the day I linked it here, though the article itself states that it was posted 6 months ago.

In case you hadn't noticed, many of the elections conducted by the various farmer's associations are marked by this type of fraudulent activity.  In rural areas corruption if often most visible within the local fishing and farming associations.

4. This is a major news story in the area, and has since became the subject of discussion on a national level.

5. Judging by the video this hot spring is better suited to those with kids.  The name "Lover's Valley" doesn't quite align with how this place is being marketed.

6. Some of the complaints expressed in this article may be valid, or it might just be people living in a very remote area expecting too much from a government that is situated very, very far away.  I'm not familiar with the source and this article may also be politically motivated.

1a. Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chi-mai visited Alian and Tianliao districts to distribute red envelopes during the Chinese New Year holiday.  These red envelopes were, according to the Mayor's office, given in appreciation of a revitalized local economy. 陳其邁走春阿蓮 , 田寮  送上蛇年開運紅包  祝福高雄經濟再創高峰

9a. Six hikers were stranded on a sandbar in Taoyuan after the water rose in a local river.  Search and rescue personnel had difficulty landing a helicopter in the area to expedite their rescue. 溪水暴漲致高雄桃源6登山客受困沙洲  搜救人員挺進救暖 "必要時將強行渡河"

2a. Qishan and Sanmin districts went without water last week.  The water utility is undertaking maintenance and improvement work involving both a water purification plant and local sewers.  Over twenty thousand residents were affected by the stoppage. 高雄旗山 , 三民區5/8停水  影響2萬1500戶

6a. There's a new water park for children in Liouguei.  It's located in the Baolai Hot Spring Area, and opens Saturdays and Sundays. 來東高雄戲水  六龜山城水樂園登場

Due to recent temperature fluctuations this year's mango harvest hasn't been great.  Mango farmers in Maolin have been hard hit by this development, and as a way of addressing this situation the Department of Agriculture has approved loans to local farmers reporting lower crop yields. 高雄市改良種芒果及茂林區本地種芒果  開花著果不佳  農損救助即日起受理

7b. The Maolin National Scenic Area Management Office and the Aboriginal Family Service Center in Pingtung County have been working together to host cultural exchange activities between members of different tribal groups.  The goal of these activities is helping children and members of disadvantaged groups learn more about both their own culture and local industries. 茂管處邀瑪家小孩訪部落

1. It's all down to population density.  Of course some people there are going to complain when they aren't included in any infrastructure project, but the population in Qishan and Meinong has been declining, and extending the MRT system into that area seems impractical.  I could see a train line, however.

1. I'll be visiting Tianliao for photographic purposes this semester.  Props to whoever wrote that article for getting into the Air Force Education Center.  That place isn't easy to get to and to get into.

2. I feel like there's a better way to describe this activity, but at the moment it escapes me.  It's a common sight at many temples.  When a devotee faces a tough decision, they'll throw two crescent-shaped blocks of wood to the floor in front of shrine.  They'll then interpret the god's opinion on the matter from how these blocks come to rest on the floor.

3. I'm not a big fan of that old street, but the park behind it is impressive.  There's a Shinto shrine on top of the hill/mountain dating back to the Japanese Colonial Administration, and there are also other points of historical significance in or near the park.

4. In traditional Chinese thinking a wife marries out of her birth family and joins her husband's family.  On the second day of Chinese New Year wives often return "home" to visit their birth parents and extended relatives.

5. It's not that hot down here in Hengchun, but definitely getting warmer.  The winds have died down and it's almost warm enough to swim.

6. There are Rukai people in Maolin?  I had no idea, I thought they were all in or near Wutai in Pingtung.  I suppose that it makes a certain geographic sense.
