Xinhua District, Tainan City

Xinhua is north of Guanmiao and Longqi.  The western half consists of farms and small factories, while the eastern half is where the mountains begin.

Xinhua has a long history, and has been a distribution center for local farmers since at least the Qing Dynasty.  In older times it was known as "Damujiang" (Tavocan), a name given to it by the Siraya Tribe.  There are Siraya villages in Xinhua to this day.

According to the last census, 43,418 people live in Xinhua.

This is the "Gua Gua Garden" Sweet Potato Tourist Factory, also known as the Sweet Potato Ecological Story Hall.  A variety of sweet potato products are sold here.  It's south of central Xinhua.

There's a small museum next to the store.  I would strongly urge you to NOT buy the sweet potato tea.

This is inside the museum.  As these types of places go this place is very clean and well organized.  There's a small concession area selling pizza, sweet potato fries and other snacks near the entrance.

On my way out I bought a bag of the spicy sweet potato chips.  They weren't bad.  Sweet potato wine?  Not interested.

We found this temple down an alley near the Xinhua Old Street.  It dates back to the 1700s, and many of its architectural details are very interesting.

Tainan is a place where Taiwan's history feels very much alive.

Around the corner from the temple.  If I lived here I doubt I'd own a car.

The Yangkuei Literature Memorial Hall, celebrating the life and works of a famous local writer.  It's within walking distance of the Xinhua Old Street.

The Township Hall Restaurant.  We briefly considered eating here, but decided against it.  I haven't had good luck with Western-style restaurants in rural areas.  For all I know the food here is excellent, but in this case I felt like the odds were against me.

The Xinhua Old Street.  This is one of the better preserved old streets I've been to, and if you've been following this blog for a while you'll know that I've been to A LOT of old streets.

Your first thought might be "sex shop" but no, these modes of support are meant for injured or aging bodies.  For many local residents years of farming have taken a toll.

Toward the eastern end of the district is the Xinhua Tree Farm, which is managed by Taichung's Jungxing University.  It's a surprisingly scenic place, and MUCH better than the nearby Forest Park in Guanmiao.
。

Thankfully we didn't see any monkeys.  I hate monkeys.  Snakes and stinging insects I can deal with, but I despise monkeys.

We walked through about half of this place, and I was most impressed by the wetland area.  I wouldn't mind visiting again and exploring the rest of it.

Still further east is the Siraya Green Valley, a spot popular with local hikers.  This is where the mountains really start, and the road to this place is a mix of cemeteries, strange temples and aboriginal villages.

Just look at those trees.  Part of me wanted to hike in a little ways, but I was a little tired from the Tree Farm.

Back west a little ways is the Hutoupi Reservoir.  Hutoupi is Taiwan's oldest reservoir and a popular recreation site in the summer.  As it was the cold wind was blowing off the water, the place was packed, and we didn't stay long.

Restaurants I Like 我喜歡的餐廳: Pingtung 屏東 1

Chaogenfan Fried Rice Restaurant

Type of Food 料理類別: Chinese 中式

Hours of Operation 營業時間: 11 AM to 2:30 PM, 5 PM to 8:30 PM, Tuesday to Sunday

Getting There 交通: It's in central Hengchun, not far from the main road through town.  A drive south down Hengchun's Old Street will take you right by it.

Price 價錢: It's affordable. 划算。

Parking 停車: Parking a car in the area is a challenge.  You'll probably have to park either closer to Highway 26 or further up the hill, toward Hengchun Elementary School.

Should You Make A Reservation? 要訂位嗎 ?: Seats are limited, and it's not the kind of place that does reservations.  Be aware that it fills up quickly on weekends.

Thoughts 意見:

They serve fried rice, a few side dishes and soups.  In my opinion their fried rice is the best in Hengchun, and the side dishes and soups are also very good.  I've eaten there twice already, and I'd be glad to go back there again.

A nice thing about this restaurant is its location on the Old Street.  It's a good place from which to watch people.  There's also a big park/temple complex across the street, and the old city wall is nearby.

Taiwan 101: Money and What's On It

In the introductions below I'm restricting myself to coins and bills in circulation, and moreover to coins and bills seen during everyday transactions.  Yes, there's a 200 NT bill, and yes, there are other coins, but you aren't likely to see them at the local Family Mart or 7-11.

1. The 1 NT Coin

Side 1: That's Chiang Kai-shek, Taiwan's first President.  Above Generalissimo Chiang's likeness is the year according to the Republic of China calendar.

If you're ever confused about the year on the Republic of China calendar, just subtract 1911 (the year before the founding of the Republic of China) from whatever the year on the Western calendar is.

And why the year before the founding of the Republic of China?  Because subtracting 1912 from subsequent years would make the first year zero.

Side 2: 壹 means "one" and 圓 means "circle" or "coin."  Note that 圓 (yuan) is pronounced the same way as 元 (dollar).

2. The 5 NT Coin

Side 1: Chiang Kai-shek again, with the year above his head.

Side 2: 伍 is an older way of writing 五 or "five," thus "five circles" or "five coins."

3. The 10 NT Coin

There are several variations on this coin, many of which you'll see in connection to Double Ten Day.  If you see a 10 NT coin with many little coins engraved on one side don't worry -- it's probably real.

Side 1: There are two versions of this side, one with Chiang Kai-shek and another with Sun Yat-sen.  Chiang Kai-shek's coin is engraved with the year, Sun Yat-sen's coin commemorates the 100th year of the Republic of China.

Side 2: The Chiang Kai-shek version has 拾圓 ("ten coins") on the obverse, the Sun Yat-sen version has 10圓 on the obverse.  There are some "secret messages" on this coin, but nothing easily observable on coins worn from use.

4. The 50 NT Coin

Side 1: Sun Yat-sen beneath the year.

Side 2: 50圓 and 五十 ("fifty").  It should be noted that there are three "touch points" (dots) on the bottom of the coin.  These touch points are for the use of sight impaired people.  There's one touch point on the 10 NT coin, two touch points on the 20 NT coin and three touch points on the 50 NT coin.  I haven't discussed the 20 NT coin here because it's not used often.

There's also, by the way, a 0.5 NT coin, but I've seen it maybe twice in 22 years of living in Taiwan.  What are you going to buy with 0.5 NT anyway?  Answer: nothing that I know of.

5 The 100 NT Bill

Side 1: That's Sun Yat-sen, the "father" of the Republic of China.  Beneath him are words referring to the Book of Rites.  The Book of Rites was written by the philosopher Li Yun, and in it Li Yun puts forth the idea of "The Great Unity," a model of the perfect society.  The Book of Rites was a big influence on Sun Yat-sen.

Side 2: That's the Chung-shan Building, on Yangming Mountain in Taipei.  It's part of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall complex.  Up until 2005 it was where the National Assembly met, but now it's only used for state functions.

6. The 500 NT Bill

Side 1: Those are sika deer on Dabajian Mountain.  Sika deer are native to Taiwan and many other countries in Asia.  Dabajian Mountain is very famous, and is located inside Shei-Pa National Park.

Side 2: The Nanwang Elementary School youth baseball team.  I believe they won the Youth Baseball World Series at some point.

7. The 1000 NT Bill

Side 1: Students in class.  Perhaps they're trying to locate Taiwan on the globe?

Side 2: A nature scene.  The birds pictured are Mikado pheasants.  The two birds are on Jade Mountain during sunrise.

8. The 2000 NT Bill

You don't see this bill often.  It's more of a thing you see in magazines in connection with wealth.

Side 1: The Formosat-1, a now decommissioned observation satellite launched by Taiwan, and other examples of related technology.

Side 2: Examples of native biodiversity: The Formosan landlocked salmon swimming beneath pine trees near Mount Nanhu.  Mount Nanhu is in Taroko National Park.
