Tainan in the News 台南的新聞 (South 南) 3

There are 37 Districts in Tainan City.  These districts are divided into North Tainan and South Tainan, or those "north of the [Dzengwen] river" and those "south of the [Dzengwen] river."  The districts of North Tainan are further grouped into the Xinying Area, the Beimen Area and the Dzengwen Area.  The districts of South Tainan are further grouped into the Fucheng Area, the Xinfeng Area and the Xinhua Area. 台南市分為37個區 ， 這37個地區分成曾文溪北部的北台南跟曾文溪南部的南台南 。 北台南又分為新營地區 、北門地區跟曾文地區 ； 南台南又分為府城地區 、 新豐地區跟新化地區 。

1. 安南區 Annan District

1a. City councilman Guo Xinliang is concerned about the development of land and government-owned properties in his district.  The local population is increasing, and he's concerned that the Tainan City Government isn't addressing problems with transportation and other infrastructure issues there. 郭信良促加強安南區建設 (1)

2. 中西區 West Central District

2a. A woman with dementia became lost in West Central District and was returned to her home by police. 失智老婦人清晨路邊閒晃  暖警即時尋獲協助返家

Downtown Tainan has been trying to develop itself into a kind of "Taiwanese Venice," with construction projects popping up here and there along the canals that pass through the area.  As part of this process the local government has approved two lots in West Central District for development, but experts have pointed to the fact that not zoning these lots for residential use may cause local development plans to stall. 台南老市區推2筆地上權 "不能蓋住宅" 專家不樂觀

3. 安平區 Anping District

3a. Tainan City will celebrate its 400th anniversary next year.  The Tainan City Drum Association is already practicing for this event, which will feature local drummers marching in a parade.  Their very public (and very loud) practice session also anticipates Dragon Boat Festival, which will take place in a few weeks. 安平鼓樂嘉年華5/28踩街  為台南400年暖壽慶生

3b. A car collided with a median island on a road in Anping, resulting in the car flipping over.  There were no serious injuries and police are investigating the accident. 自撞分隔島翻車 !  台南安平橋車四腳朝天  4乘客自行脫困

4. 南區 South District

4a. This article introduces a restaurant in Tainan where you can still buy a steak meal for 60 NT.  Many locals grow nostalgic over such places, which are less common than they once were. 時代的眼淚 !  台南限定的60元懷舊牛排  滿滿通心麵 + 玉米濃湯太划算

5. 北區 North District

5a. An urban renewal/public housing project should get underway in North District as soon as the Tainan City Government completes its review of the proposed development. 台南九六新村開發預計六月招商  都發局 : 可取得250戶社宅

A three year old girl was killed and her mother seriously injured after an SUV struck them while they were using a crosswalk in North District.  The Tainan City Government will try to make the intersection safer by adding more crosswalk markings and a pedestrian signal, though it remains to be seen whether such measures will actually make the intersection safer.  Tainan has recently been under scrutiny due to unsafe road conditions for motorists and pedestrians alike. 台南北區母女車禍路口 5/26設置行人專用時相

6. 安定區 Anding District

7. 東區 East District

7a. This article discusses a tourist map of East District which was published recently.  There are many pictures of local points of interest in the article. 台南東區散步路線....

8. 善化區 Shanhua District

9. 新市區 Xinshr District

9a. A white wax apple tree was moved from private land to another location in Xinshr.  The private land was going to be developed, and the district office deemed the rare tree worth preserving. 保留樹齡一甲子白蓮霧樹  台南新市區公所雇工移植

9b. The value of land in Xinshr continues to rise alongside the development of the Science and Technology Park.  Property speculators cite recent investments by TSMC, 3M and other companies as the reason for the rise in prices. 新市 "世界南科A"  擁全台科學園區最佳地段

10. 永康區 Yongkang District

10a. An exhibition for coffee beans grown in Tainan was held in Yongkang. 台南產區咖啡特展  永康新總圖開幕

11. 仁德區 Rende District

12. 歸仁區 Gueiren District

14. 新化區 Xinhua District

14a. Xinhua District will host a talent show and orchestra performance.  One aim of the festival is to promote the use of new indoor leisure spaces built by the local government. 里社區才藝嘉年華  週六新化登場

14b. Xinhua held a "Five Treasures Festival" to promote the sweet potatoes, pineapples, bamboo shoots, sesame and olives grown there. 比三寶再多兩寶  台南新化五寶節又來了 (3)

15. 龍崎區 Longqi District

16. 左鎮區 Zuojhen District

17. 山上區 Shanshang District

18. 玉井區 Yujing District

18a. Renovations of Yujing's Hutou Mountain Exercise Park were recently completed, and the Tainan City Mayor has declared the park a new tourist attraction. 玉井虎頭山運動公園及周邊改善完成...

19. 楠西區 Nanxi District

1. Part of this issue was the relocation of a local radio station from a building considered unsuitable for use.  Who listens to the radio now?  Is that still a thing?  I'm really not sure, but the radio station seems to be at the center of the discussion.

2. Really not sure who'd want to camp in Rende District, it being so close to downtown Tainan.  There are much better places to camp further east.  "The 218 Camping Park" is named after a Japanese battalion that was stationed there back when Taiwan was a Japanese colony.

3. Someone in Taiwan is growing olives?  Who knew?!

4. I've walked around both Zuojhen Village and its elementary school.  A very cute and scenic little school, but that village is dying a slow death.  I don't think I saw a single person there under 60.

5. I've been there.  If you haven't visited already I'd give it a few months to a year.  There's not much there now.

6. The most likely explanation is that a local man's dogs killed the nun and he attempted to cover up the attack.  The nun was walking in a very remote area and the man had many dogs on his property.

Kaohsiung in the News 高雄的新聞 (East 東) 3

 

There are 38 districts in Kaohsiung City.  The districts discussed here are all east of the Formosa Freeway (#3).  They're much more rural than districts west of the Formosa Freeway, have a much lower population density, and are generally more scenic. 高雄市分為38個行政區 。  這裡文章討論的行政區都位在福爾摩沙高速公路以東 ，  這些行政區和高速公路以西的行政區比較起來: 較鄉下 、人口密度較低 、風景比較好。

1. 田寮區 Tianliao District

1a. This article introduces Tianliao's Moon World.  It's a very scenic area, partly because it's difficult to build there and partly because it's not a good area for farming. 田寮月世界惡地成美景  專家 : 不建設即是最好建設

2. 旗山區 Qishan District

2a. Politicians in Kaohsiung representing the DPP are pushing for an inspection of private residences built on farmland in Qishan.  Construction of large houses/homestays on land reserved for agricultural use is a big problem in many parts of Taiwan. 旗山爆農地 "綠營權貴" 豪宅群  監委要查了 !

2b. There was a huge fire in Qishan, which (in a way) isn't surprising given the recent lack of rain.  Even with the concerted efforts of Kaohsiung firefighters, it took well over 5 days to extinguish this blaze. 創紀錄 !  旗山林地大火延燒3天3夜  全市消防隊已輪過一圈打火

2c. The Qishan District Office is discussing a plan to build a crematorium in the area.  Many residents oppose this plan. 旗山殯儀館設置案捲土重來 ?  高雄市議會今開協調會

3. 內門區 Neimen District

3a. The fire in Qishan spread to Neimen and Shanlin districts. 燒了4天 !  高雄內門 , 杉林區林地大火終於撲滅

4. 美濃區 Meinong District

4a. Many of those serving in several district government positions changed jobs recently.  The director of the Qishan Household Registration Office returned to Meinong to serve as Meinong District Mayor. 高雄市12區長調動  謝鶴琳回鍋任美濃區長

4b. Members of the Agriculture and Forestry Committee visited Neimen and Meinong to investigate how the local pineapple crop is grown, harvested, stored and transported to market.  They hope to streamline the supply chain in the area.  There has been a lot of volatility with regard to pineapple prices in south Taiwan. 高市議會農林委員會考察內門 , 美濃 助農友拓展通路

4c. Firefighters held a fire safety activity at Longshan Elementary School. 消防向下扎根  美濃區龍山國小舉辦消防體驗活動

5. 杉林區 Shanlin District

5a. After that fire, another.  The big fire was extinguished only to have another fire break out on 4/18 in Shanlin. 高雄又見山林火警  田寮區殘火今晨才撲滅

6. 六龜區 Liouguei District

6a. Firefighters were called in after another fire set in a field got out of control.  Both this fire and another fire on the same day in Alian District were set by locals trying to clear brush from their land. 高雄阿蓮 , 六龜燒雜草  消防人員冒險搶救 (2)

7. 茂林區 Maolin District

7b. It did finally rain in Kaohsiung, though mostly in low lying areas, far from the catchment areas that would alleviate the current drought conditions. 高雄落雨了  可惜集中平地未下在集水區

8. 甲仙區 Jiaxian District

8a. Local firefighters held a fire safety activity in Jiaxian.  This event coincided with the local taro, bamboo shoot and plum harvests. 甲仙區一年一度芋筍梅節  消防分隊進行防火災宣導

8c. The Southern Cross-Island Highway between Kaohsiung and Taitung has been open for a year, and the continual traffic through districts like Jiaxian has been both good and bad for local residents.  On the plus side development has increased economic opportunities in the area, on the minus side traffic and garbage are becoming big problems.  Both the Jiaxian District Office and the Transportation Bureau are looking at ways to address these problems. 南橫通車滿周年 !  甲仙人潮曾連開2超商  賓來溫泉旅店常客滿 (3)

9. 桃源區 Taoyuan District

9a. It's begun raining up in Taoyuan.  Local police are urging those driving the Southern Cross-Island Highway to exercise caution. 高雄桃源區開始降雨  警 : 南橫公路濕滑小心慢行

9b. Representatives from the Taoyuan District Office met with local farmers to discuss environmentally friendly farming methods and offer resources.  Many farms in Taoyuan claim to be environmentally friendly, though there is some doubt as to the truth of these claims. 10. 那瑪夏區 Namaxia District

1. It doesn't say so in any of the linked articles, but this has to be the same fire.  The north end of Qishan is between Neimen and Shanlin.

2. I'm not quite sure if this practice of burning brush from fields is illegal in all places, at all times.  If it isn't it should be, and violators should be punished to the full extent of the law.  Aside from property and habitat damage, this practice has already led to the loss of several lives.

3. A small rant here: many Taiwanese tourists are DIRTY.  I live near Kenting, and no, you can't blame it all on tourists, people from out of town, city people, country people, older people, younger people or any other group you care to think up.  Name a group -- I dare you -- and I can provide examples of members of that group littering in my area.  The government needs to make environmental education more of a priority, and steps need to be taken to clean up Taiwan.  There, I'll get off my soapbox now.

4. One of the donors offered a rather fanciful story about driving his car through the area, having his car flip over during an accident, and being saved from a mortal plunge by roadside trees.  I'm not sure if I believe it.

5. No reason to specifically visit Namaxia for this reason.  Any township/district deep enough in the mountains should have fireflies.  In my experience viewing these creatures is always a 50/50 proposition.  Sometimes you drive up there and it's amazing, other times you're straining your eyes to see a handful of fireflies.

6. To put things in their proper perspective, it takes about two hours to drive from Kaohsiung Main Station to Namaxia District.  IF there's no traffic and IF all the roads are clear.  Namaxia is far removed from the lives of most people in Kaohsiung City.
