Portside Fun on Green Island

The Chinese below was taken from "A New Appreciation of Fishing" 漁樂新視界.  This book was published by 財團法人台灣養殖魚業發展基金會 in 2012 and the English parts were written/translated by me.

Portside Fun on Green Island

Green Island is located in southeast Taiwan.  It's about 33 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean from Taitung City.  The island's total area is around 15 kilometers square.  The terrain consists of volcanic rock, and for this reason people also call it "the burning island."  It was once famous as a place where people were imprisoned, and as far as the outlying islands go it has more history. (1)

This mini green paradise is located in the tropics, so it's warm and very wet all year.  The "black current" ["Kuroshiro current"] passes directly through the area, and for this reason the island is surrounded by an abundance of marine life, especially coral and tropical fish.  With its azure sea and vibrant colors, this place is heaven for snorkelers and divers.  Its wonderful underwater landscape will definitely not disappoint you! (2)

How to go?

Taking a plane: there are flights between Taitung [City] and Green Island almost every day.  [These flights] are affected by changes in the weather, so you should reserve tickets in advance.

Taking a boat: there are many companies offering passage to Green Island.  A round trip ticket from Fugang Fishing Port in Taitung to Nanliao Fishing Port on Green Island costs about 1000 NT.  You need to reserve tickets first.

[Those] needing to check information on planes and boats can visit the "Green Island Information Service Network!" (3)

Nanliao Fishing Port

Nanliao Fishing Port is to the west of Nanliao Village.  It's the primary marine transportation hub on Green Island.  The coastline [around it] is very flat, with a long intertidal zone and abundant coral resources to the south of the port.  The stable currents make it a thriving habitat for cute tropical fish.  It has become a good place to both observe the intertidal ecology and to snorkel!

The Green Island Lighthouse

The Green Island Lighthouse is located at the northwest corner of the island, on the east side of a cape.  The cape is equipped with a 33.3 meter-tall white lighthouse, this being the famous "Green Island Lighthouse" which is a very historic building.  From the top one can enjoy panoramic views of the entire island, and it is the island's most famous tourist attraction.  Near the lighthouse is a lagoon which is ecologically diverse.  It is highly recommended that you visit.

Diving on Green Island

Green Island is heaven for snorkelers and divers.  Its abundant coral reef ecology and tropical fish draw in huge crowds every summer.  There are many great snorkeling spots here.  If the wind is blowing from the north, people will usually go to "Shrlang" on the west side [of the island], if the wind is blowing from the southwest [they'll go to] "Dabaisha" to the southeast or "Chaikou" to the north.  No matter which area [you visit], Green Island's underwater world is worth visiting again and again! (4)

Grapefruit Lake

Grapefruit Lake is north of Haitsanping.  [It's not actually a lake], but rather a bay nestled within the coastal mountains.  The so-called "lake" comes from a mispronunciation of the Taiwanese word "Ao" [which means "bay"].  Grapefruit Lake is really a bay located in a mountain cleft.  The land around this bay itself is very open and flat.  This is how it got its name.

Guanyin Cave

Guanyin Cave is also known as "[Coral] Rock Cave."  It was formed through the action of currents upon a raised coral reef over a long period of time, the result being a geographical feature with the appearance of limestone.  According to legend [the goddess] Guanyin once appeared here and guided fishermen to shore safely.  Later on a one meter tall statue of the seated Guanyin was found inside the cave, and incense was burnt before it. (5)

Haitsanping

The highway which encircles Green Island extends from Nioutou ["Cow's Head"] Mountain in the north to the southeast.  It leads to this beautiful bay.  [The terrain] here mostly consists of coral reefs.  Aside from the viewing platform along the great wall [of rock] which spans the sea, Haistanping is also an excellent spot from which to view "Sleeping Beauty Rock" and "Haba Dog Rock!"  With its blue sky and azure, sea the scenery here is very moving.  When visiting Green Island it's not a spot to be missed! (6)

Zhaorh Hot Spring

[This place is] located near Sailboat Cape on Green Island.  Here gurgling hot springs form pools in the intertidal zone within the jagged reefs.  Aside from its undersea hot springs, this place is also the best spot to watch the sun come up, and for this reason it's earned the name "Zhaorh" ["Sunrise"] Hot Spring.  The hot springs here are sulphureous, with the salty taste of seawater, but they don't leave your skin sticky or dry after washing.  It's a must-see tourist attraction! (7)

Green Island Delicacies

"Seaweed" is one of Green Island's famous specialties.  It's used to create many delicious dishes by local people!  The light green "seaweed squid balls" have a subtle seaweed aroma when chewed slowly.  In addition, seaweed mixed with carrots and flour are fried in a pan, and the [result] is the unique "seaweed pancakes."  Some restaurants have even invented their own twists [on local cuisine], simmering seaweed with sugar to remove its fishy smell, and pouring it over shaved ice.  This is the famous Green Island shaved ice!

"A New Appreciation of Fishing"

NOTE 1: This will be the last excerpt from this book.  I've included all the entries from Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung and Hualien here.  Farther north than these I will not go.  There were no entries for South Tainan.

NOTE 2: Of all the entries in this book this one is probably the worst written.  I did what I could!

1. It's strange they don't mention the prison as a tourist site.  It's one of the best known things on the island.

2. Sad Memory: taking a glass-bottomed boat around the port and looking down at a whole lot of bleached coral.  At the same time our guide was busy introducing species of protected fish that "tasted good."

3. Their website is hot garbage, but yes, you should reserve plane and boat tickets in advance.  Expect delays and/or cancellations due to weather.

4. But not, I should add, a heaven for swimmers.  I found swimming on Orchid Island much easier.

5. Almost every place with a statue of the goddess has a story like this.  "Fishermen lost at sea, the goddess guiding them back to shore, etc., etc., etc.

6. It's been years, but I remember this being the prettiest spot on Green Island.  The rest of it wasn't that scenic - at least not on my trips there.

7. I agree with their conclusion.  It was the one part of Green Island that I truly enjoyed.

Portside Fun in Xingda and Yongan

The Chinese below was taken from "A New Appreciation of Fishing" 漁樂新視界.  This book was published by 財團法人台灣養殖魚業發展基金會 in 2012 and the English parts were written/translated by me.  There will be one more of these entries, covering the ports in Taitung that I didn't get to during the years I lived in Pingtung.

Portside Fun in Xingda [Port] and Yongan

Qieding is a traditional fishing village with a long history.  It's located in Kaohsiung.  Both its offshore fishing and its fish farming industries are well developed.  In recent years its Xingda Port has been renovated, and this has made Qieding an important marine tourism destination.  [A prime example of Qieding's popularity] is Xingda Port, a fun [spot] with delicious food.  Lover's Pier, [located in Xingda Port], is a great spot for lovers out for a stroll, or for families spending time together in the evenings.

Yongan is between Qieding and Mituo [districts], and boasts 6.8 kilometers of coastline.  This area was once a lagoon enclosed by sandbars, part of an inland sea formerly known as "Old Nao Port."  Yongan is an important area with regard to grouper farming, and it has been given the name "the grouper's hometown."  It's the area where large-scale grouper farming in Taiwan began.

How to go?

Exit the Zhongshan Freeway (#1) at the Luzhu interchange, and head west past the Tung Fang Design University to the end of the road.  Alternatively, you can take Highway 17 along the coast [straight to Xingda Port].  To get to Yongan you can also exit via the Luzhu interchange, or take Highway 17 along the coast. Lover's Pier in Xingda Port

Xingda Port was named one of the 10 most charming fishing ports in 2010.  Xingda Port is known for its romantic aura, and is located in Qieding District, on Qilou Bay, on Kaohsiung's most northern stretch of coastline.  It's now a multi-use tourist fishing port in the Greater Kaohsiung area.  In the daytime you can visit the European-style Lover's Pier, and stroll along its wooden boardwalk.  After sunset the lights of the port make for a truly romantic scene.  (2)

Xingda Port Tourist Fish Market

"The Xingda Port Tourist Fish Market" is located on Dafa Road and Minyou Road.  It was originally a traditional old street where the catch was brought to be sold at auction.  In this place fresh fish is auctioned and you can enjoy fresh seafood dishes.  The market opens at 3 pm daily, and is very busy around sunset on weekends.  Those who enjoy trying new things and want to join in the fun can come to see the famous "Fast Hands Fish Ball Show!" (3)

Qieding (Jiading) Wetlands

The Qieding Wetland is directly north of Xingda Fishing Port.  It's a huge inland coastal wetland which consists of a "inland freshwater wetland" formed by rainfall, and a "brackish [half saltwater] wetland" near the sea.  This wetland ecosystem changes along with rainfall patterns [throughout the year], and is an ideal spot for birdwatching.

Jinluan Temple

According to tradition, during the 48th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign a sailboat from Qianzhou [in Mainland China] was wrecked [off the coast] and caught fire soon after.  Those aboard the boat fled the disaster in a raft and escaped to Qieding.  The survivors later had a plaque inscribed, which bore the words "En Zhou Hai Yu" ["Thanks for the port in the storm"] as a way of expressing their gratitude [to the goddess].  Since most residents of Qieding make their living from fishing, the Heavenly Mother enshrined in the Jinluan Temple has become the center of worship for those living there.

Yongxin Fishing Port

Yongxin Fishing Port is a newly developed fishing port.  Its harbor can accommodate 200 fishing rafts and 30 fishing boats.  The primary catch [in this area] is mullet.  This port is not nearly as crowded as [Xingda Port], and instead offers a relaxing atmosphere.  Many avid fishermen come here for fishing expeditions [along the coast]. (5)

Yongan Wetlands

The "Yongan Wetland" formed on land previously used to dry salt.  This land was later silted over by the nearby harbor.  Water accumulates here every rainy season, and this prompted the development of a wetland nature park.  Aside from a mangrove ecosystem it's also a prime location for birdwatchers.  In 1999 this area was designated one of 53 important wild bird habitats by both Bird Life International and the Republic of China's Wild Bird Society.

Golden Mullet Roe

Xingda Fishing Port can be called Taiwan's most important mullet production and sales center.  Around winter solstice the mullet that arrive off the coast of Qieding are at their fattest, and the roe they carry is at its most mature.  For this reason [Qieding] is called "the mullet's hometown."  Those eager to try firm, fragrant and chewy mullet roe shouldn't overlook the "golden mullet roe" here!

Rouge Shrimp Sausage

This sausage is made with rouge shrimp, which are caught in the deep sea.  [This sausage] is a unique combination of shrimp and pork which is both delicious and not greasy.  You'll savor the seafood taste in every bite of this specialty sausage.  It's a specially promoted gift item from the Xingda Port Fishing Association.  When you visit the Qieding area don't forget to look for it! (4)

1. I wouldn't recommend Highway 17 if you're coming from far away.  It's a more scenic drive, but it gets a bit tricky around downtown Tainan, north Yongan and Zuoying in Kaohsiung.

Whatever you do, I strenuously recommend NOT taking Highway 1 between downtown Kaohsiung and Jiading/Yongan.  They're building the Kaohsiung MRT extension in that direction, and traffic is a nightmare.

2. This was more true years ago.  I visited Lover's Pier when it was newer, and there was a lot more to do there.  In 2025 I'd recommend skipping it altogether, and heading to the Tourist Fish Market on the other side of the port instead.  The view of the sunrise from the seawall is better anyway.

3. "Minyou Road" or 民有路 reads like a typo but it isn't.  It is the actual name for the actual road.  I was there recently and it wasn't even remotely busy.  Not sure about the "Fast Hands Fish Ball Show."  I saw no indication of it when I was there.

4. It may still be available there, or it may not be.  I can't eat shrimp so I wouldn't know.  Don't be surprised if you go up there and can't find it.  Sometimes the local merchants and fishing associations just give up on this kind of product.  There is a sustained demand for the mullet roe, but I don't know about the shrimp sausages.

5. It's no longer new by any stretch of the imagination.  On the contrary many of the local fishermen have been complaining that the place needs to be upgraded.  Having seen it for myself, yeah, I get why they're complaining.

1. Stunning?  I dunno, it's not Manzhou in the summer or anything.

2. "Mountains" is being charitable.  It's more like a hill, located to the east of the fishing port.

3. I'd expand on this and say that if you don't have a car don't bother.  Both Dzeguan and Mituo are far from any MRT stops, train stations or LRT stops.  A bus ride out there would probably be agonizing.

4. Aren't both places in Kaohsiung?  Yes they are, but people often talk this way.  By "Kaohsiung" they mean "central Kaohsiung" or "downtown Kaohsiung."

蚵 can be pronounced ㄜˊ ("e") or ㄎㄜˊ ("ke"), though most people would use ㄜˊ ("e").  Many would refer to this place by its Taiwanese name anyway.  A literal translation would be "Oyster Hut Fishing Port."

Oh, and I checked the Dzeguan District Fishing Association's website.  This tour doesn't seem to be a thing anymore.  COVID probably killed it.  This is really too bad, because I would've loved it.

5. Eh, it's OK.  City people thirsting for views of the ocean might enjoy it.  I was there not long ago and didn't find it especially scenic.  The view is a lot like the views from Jiadong or Linbian in Pingtung County: fish farms around a larger, more distant industrial areas near the ocean.

6. "Tardyhill" is on the sign leading to the place.  "Tadi" or "Luodi" is the Chinese name.

7. Not sure what "Love for Life" is/was.  A TV show?  A magazine?  Seems most likely.

You could, by the way, be more pragmatic and say that Mituo is a place where people take wedding photos.  In this respect it somewhat resembles Budai Fishing Port in Jiayi.

8. Eh, it's not THAT pretty.  You could watch the sun go down from anywhere in south Taiwan.  It'd look pretty much the same.

9. MANY people?  Kinda doubt it.  Maybe a few.

10. I have no problem with mullet, but that pork sausage mixed with mullet roe is definitely not good.  The mullet roe cakes mentioned in this section are something everyone should try, however.  Dzeguan, it should be said, has no monopoly on the production of these cakes, and I've seen them drying in the sun as far south as Donggang in Pingtung County.  There are pictures of them here.

11. "Floss" in the sense of "pork floss," the type of shredded pork jerky seen so often in Taiwan.  "Gift" here could just as easily be translated as "souvenir," but as most Western people's concept of "souvenir" more closely approximates 紀念品, I'm using "gifts."  Most Taiwanese people would buy these gifts or gift boxes to share with friends and family members.

12. Not sure if this place was ever finished.  Google Maps is showing me the same 'ol fish market.  It's possible that the store mentioned above is part of this market, but I don't remember seeing this 70-ping space when I was there last year.

Portside Fun in Hualien

The Chinese below was taken from "A New Appreciation of Fishing" 漁樂新視界.  This book was published by 財團法人台灣養殖魚業發展基金會 in 2012 and the English parts were written/translated by me.  There will be four more of these entries, covering the ports I didn't get to during the years I lived in Pingtung.

Portside Fun in Hualien

Hualien is like a treasure washed onto on the shores of east Taiwan, and upon this treasure the "black current" in turn washes up scores of fish.  Recently the trend toward marine tourism has spread to Hualien, and this trend has spurred both [the creation of] new coastal recreational facilities and new, exciting marine experiences which bring visitors into close contact with the beautiful ocean.

How to enjoy the maritime side of Hualien when you come to visit?  We recommend that you divide [the county] into two routes: north and south.  In "north Hualien" you can start from the Hualien Leisure Pier on the outskirts of Hualien City.  In "south Hualien" you can use Shrti Fishing Port as your starting point.  From [both of these routes] you can experience the wealth of [natural] resources that Hualien's mountains and seas have to offer, while at the same time taking in the unforgettable views along the coast!

How to go?

Hualien Leisure Pier --

From Taipei, drive toward Highway 9 in the direction of Hualien City.  [Once you're in Hualien City], follow Zhongshan Road south to the end, turn left on Haibin Road, continue straight to Xiangkou Road, and then turn left onto Gangbin Road.  [This route] will lead you to the Hualien Fishing Port's Leisure Pier.

Shrti Fishing Port

Leaving from Hualien, follow the Yanbinhai ("coastal") Highway south toward Taitung, then take Highway 11 to kilometer 64.5.

A Wonderful Life

The Hualien Leisure Pier is on the outskirts of Hualien City, about ten minutes away by car.  The transportation [to and from this place] is very convenient, and it has become an important tourist site in Hualien.  Visitors can walk out onto the pier and search for signs of whales and dolphins in the Pacific Ocean.

Cycling through Hualien has become very popular.  The 15 kilometer long Hualien Portside Bike Trail passes through Hualien's Seashore Park, over the Shuguang Bridge, past the whale watching pier, past the Qilaibi Lighthouse and other scenic spots.  Along the way you can enjoy the beautiful mountain and coastal scenery alongside the endless ocean.

Whale and Dolphin Watching from Hualien Port

Whale watching tours departing from Hualien Port go as far north as the Qingshui Cliffs.  Along the way you'll be accompanied by whales and dolphins, and you'll be able to view Qixingtan, the Coastal Mountain Range and the Central Mountain Range from the sea.  [A trip aboard a whale watching boat] will allow you to experience both the surprise and joy that Spanish sailors felt when they first viewed Taiwan in the 16th century, these sailors dubbing it "Formosa" ["the beautiful island"]. The Southshore Park is near the coast in Hualien City.  It has been beautifully landscaped and has [its own] recreational facilities.  [During the day] visitors can go to the seawall and enjoy the ocean view, while at night the Southshore Park hosts a night market where you can enjoy the sea breeze while sampling various foods.  This park attracts many tourists. The Shuguang Bridge spans the Meilun River.  It was once a railway bridge used by trains, but has since been converted into a wooden bridge provided for the use of pedestrians and cyclists.  While standing on the bridge you can see the sun rise from the Pacific Ocean, and this is why the bridge has been named "Shuguang".

[曙光 or "Shuguang" = "dawn" or "the light of dawn"]

Even though the Qixingtan Scenic Area is called a "lake" [潭 or "tan" = "lake"], it's really a beautiful moon-shaped bay.  Standing in the bay, with the wind blowing in from the ocean, and playing in the water there is very pleasant.  There are viewing platforms along the beach, stone sculptures, ecological plazas and pavilions.  There's no light pollution there, so it's a good place for stargazing. Qixingtan Fixed Net Fishing

Fixed net fishing is a special type of fishing seen off the coast around Qixingtan.  [This method] employs large nets suspended from ropes.  Since there is no port in Qixingtan, fishermen use small rubber rafts to embark from the beach, bring in the day's catch, and return to shore, where they auction off their fish.  This practice has become a distinctive feature of Qixingtan. The Bonito Museum is the first museum in Taiwan to introduce bonito processing to the public.  The main exhibition hall explains how bonito are processed, and there's also a bonito DIY activity and exhibits detailing the fisheries ecology of Qixingtan.  This place doesn't only have history and culture, it can also [help you] soak in a lot of new knowledge.

Shrti Fishing Port was selected as one of the ten most charming fishing ports in 2010.  It's a more traditional fishing port, and feels like an old fishing village.  It's also one of the first places to promote recreational fishing.  In recent years the port has grown famous through the whale and dolphin watching tours [which depart from there].  The stunning coastal mountains and the matchless ocean scenery of the blue Pacific, with the peaks rising from the waves all around, are a defining characteristic of this fishing port. (5)

The name "Shrtiping" ["stone steps"] comes from the stone slabs of varying lengths which protrude into the sea.  [From] the land [further away from the coast], these stone slabs look like stairs.  Shrtiping has been designated a special scenic area with camping facilities provided.  Spending the night here, beneath the stars and in the presence of the waves, is a great idea. (6)

"Bakelilan" is the Amis name for Shrtiping.  Several Amis artists have established the Bakelilan Arts Village here as a means of representing their culture.  After entering the Arts Village you can stand on the beach, admire local artwork, and sample both the traditional culture of the Amis people and their creative cuisine.

The Bonito Museum's "Dadaxi Sashimi"

"Dadaxi" sashimi is a traditional fisherman's dish from Shikoku in Japan.  The bonito is cut into strips, and then seared using a fire kindled with dry straw burning at a high temperature.  Orange juice is poured onto the strips once they're cooked, and the strips are pounded with the flat of a knife to infuse the orange juice flavor into the bonito meat.  After this point you add minced ginger and chopped green onion.  The bonito meat has a hearty flavor beneath its charcoal grilled skin. Shrtiping Red Frog Crab Cuisine

In recent years the catching of red frog crabs has become a popular "marine experience activity" at Shrtiping Fishing Port.  The red frog crabs caught there offer a unique taste that no visitor should miss!  Although [this type of crab] is sometimes referred to as "the stinky ocean bug," this is only because of the smell which emanates from them after they die.  Fresh red frog crabs don't smell bad at all, they're delicious, and their plump meat is very tender.

Bakelilan Aboriginal Cuisine

At Bakelilan Arts Village you can enjoy traditional Amis cuisine such as smoked flying fish, flying fish with rice and taro and other dishes.  The aboriginal chef combines traditional and modern [cooking techniques], creating a type of "menu-free" Amis cuisine.  This cuisine relies upon foods caught by the chef [himself] while snorkeling, and it changes with the seasons. 1. This "Formosa" or "ilha Formosa" is actually from Portuguese, not Spanish.  Was the Portuguese sailor exclaiming "Beautiful island!" from a Spanish ship?  I'm not well versed enough in that chapter of Taiwan's history to say.

2. I've been here a couple times.  I remember it being very dirty.

3. If you're going in the summer bring an umbrella.  It gets very hot and there's little shade.

4. This type of fishing isn't exclusive to Qixingtan.  I've seen it done in Taitung as well.

5. "Quaint" maybe, but also economically depressed.  This area is far from everything, and a lot of the people living there are just squeaking by.  I recommend visiting it for the scenery, which is great.  Any services or local foods introduced here might not be available when you get there.

6. The worst camping trip I ever had was at Shrtiping.  It was summer, it was hot, and the noise from the people in the parking lot made it impossible to sleep.

7. I think this one might be history.  Sounds kind of good though, doesn't it?

8. "Menu-free" = $$$.  Local aboriginal restaurants like this also have very unreliable hours of operation.  If you're going to this type of place always make sure it's still open first.
