Fengbin Township, Hualien County

Fengbin is east (over the Coastal Mountain Range) of Ruisui.  It's also north of Taitung County.  It borders the Pacific Ocean.

According to the last census, 4,413 people live in Fengbin.  It's the least populated township in Hualien County.

Traveling north on Highway 11 from Taitung, one of the first things you'll see in Fengbin is this monument, which is part of a complex honoring unidentified road workers in the area.

Further north is the Tropic of Cancer Monument, a popular stop for tour buses.  There's another Tropic of Cancer Monument in Ruisui, on the other side of the mountains.

This barbecue restaurant, across the highway from the monument, smelled delightful, but we'd had a big breakfast and it was too early for lunch.

Minutes away, in Jingpu Village, you'll find the mouth of the Xiouguluan River, which passes through the Coastal Mountain Range on its way to the Pacific.

Further on is the Moon Cave, a place I've been passing by for years and finally visited recently.  There's a type of bat only found in this one cave, and for a fee you can take a boat into the cave to see them.

An ecologically conscious tourist activity?  Eh... I'm not sure, but the tour guides do urge boat passengers to keep their voices down, and I don't think we bothered the bats too much.

The part of the cave open to the public is very small, so don't expect an awe-inspiring encounter with nature.  The bats are cute though.  I would have taken pictures of them, but flash photography isn't allowed inside the cave.

The best known thing in Fengbin, if it can be said that anything in Fengbin is well known, is the Shitiping Scenic Area, which comes equipped with a campground.  It's a very beautiful place, and well worth visiting.

... although I must say that I had a terrible experience camping here years ago.  It was extremely hot, everyone camping around us was too loud, and we barely slept that night.

Striations, dudes!  Striations!

That's Shiti Fishing Port in the background.  I've eaten at the restaurants in the port several times, but the last time was years ago.

If it's a hot day I recommend bringing an umbrella.  There's almost no shade in Shitiping.

South of the scenic area is the Yina Flying Fish Restaurant.  If you're looking for aboriginal food this is probably the place to go, though there's another, similar restaurant across the highway from it.

I thought the barbecue plate was good, but the other dishes we had were just OK.

Further up the coast is Dawan ("Big Bay") Viewpoint.

We saw a few people diving along the coast, both north and south of here.  There were also a few surfers at Jiqi Beach.

On our way north we tried to visit the Fengbin Skywalk, but found that it had been damaged during the last typhoon.  Only half of the skywalk was open, and instead of the normal entrance fee they were only charging 50 NT to park a car there.

Instead we went to the Dashrbi Mountain Trail, which I think is new?  It offers some stunning views of the coastline.

Looking north, up the trail.

Looking east, into the Pacific.

And looking south, toward Shitiping.

On the other side of Jiqi Beach we rested for a bit at the Baqi Rest Stop, at the northern end of the township.  I can't say that it's worth visiting in its own right, but if you're tired and thirsty it can be a good place to stop.

Oh, and one more thing.  I meant to drive the road from Central Fengbin to Guangfu, on the other side of the mountains, but at the time of my visit this road was closed.  If you're in the area it's not a bad drive.  It's much less stressful that the drive between Fengbin and Ruisui.

Field Trips In and Around Taitung

Last week we went to the Shuangliu Forest Recreation Area in Pingtung County.  The drive from our school took an hour and a half.  Along the way we passed through Taimali, Dawu and Daren townships, turning left into Shuangliu on the other side of the tunnel that sits between the two counties.

I'd give that field trip 5 stars out of 10.  It was an awesome day for grades 4 to 6, but a less than awesome day for grades 1 to 3.  Grades 4 to 6 hiked to a waterfall in the morning, and designed an imaginary town in the afternoon.  The weather was perfect, the mountain scenery was impressive, and the guides assigned to the upper grades did a good job of introducing the place without turning the excursion into an extended lecture.

Unfortunately grades 1 to 3 didn't get the same deal.  For whatever reason their guides were much older, much slower, and much longer-winded.  The lower grades' morning involved an agonizingly slow crawl along the same section of trail that the upper grades had all left behind long before, and during this crawl the guides felt compelled to introduce every aspect of the Shuangliu Forest Recreation Area, right down to the smallest detail.  At one point the older lady leading my group even went into the history of the gutter alongside the trail, a history which went right over the heads of the second graders gathered around her.

The afternoon class for the younger kids consisted of an art project in which they made pictures out of leaves and twigs.  This art project was punctuated by long periods of waiting.  By the end of that afternoon class many of the kids were beside themselves with boredom, and I couldn't blame them, having escaped into the older kids' class several times up to that point.  To make matters worse the lower grades' classroom was really, really hot, so much so that I was visibly sweating in the back of the room.

Oh well, you can't win them all.  Not every field trip is going to be fun.  I just wish that those responsible had given a little more thought to how younger kids learn, and to how their shorter attention spans can be accommodated.  More play time would have been good, less time being lectured at would have been even better.

As bad as half that field trip was, it was still nice to get outside for a while.  Our kids aren't the outdoorsiest children in the world, and I think giving them more time out of doors is a good thing.  Even in a rural area like Zhiben, many kids are shut up indoors a lot of the time, and giving them more opportunities to explore their natural environment can be very rewarding.

Shuangliu was my third field trip with my present school.  Last school year we went to the National Museum of Prehistory and, during another outing, to a couple places in Taimali.  The Prehistory Museum was fine - no one was managing it that hard - even if the wait outside the museum beforehand was very hot.  The trip to Taimali was weird and somewhat interesting.  We visited an archaeological site on the coast, and also had a volunteer from one of the indigenous villages read us a story.  To be honest I felt a little sorry for that volunteer.  Last year's sixth graders were not fun to deal with.

Back when I worked in downtown Taitung there were of course many other field trips.  I believe the farthest we went during my tenure there was Farglory Amusement Park in Hualien.  That excursion involved a long bus ride, made more difficult by students with access to the onboard KTV system.  We also went to the aquarium in Chenggong, the East Coast National Scenic Area Visitor's Center, the Prehistory Museum (a popular local destination for field trips), Gaotai ("High Terrace") in Luye, the "Rice School" and the Water Park in Guanshan, Muye Ranch in Chrshang, an organic guava farm in Liji Village, Chulu Ranch, Yuansheng Botanical Gardens and what was then known as the Culture Park in Beinan Township.  Oh, and we also went to RT Mart (now known as "Big PX Mart") once.  That particular field trip was memorably stressful

Collectively these field trips represent a lot of memories for me, most of them good, and the passage of time has added a certain glow to even the bad parts.  Now that I think about it, I have thirteen years' worth of Taitung field trips under my belt, spanning most of the county and including hundreds, if not thousands, of kids.

If you work in a public school I'd encourage you to attend whatever field trips they have planned.  It's a good opportunity to both bond with your students and to learn more about this island where we all live.  Yes, field trips can be hot, and yes, they can be tiring, but it's during the less comfortable moments that people get closer, that friendships are forged, and that relationships are established.  No, places like the charcoal kilns in Dashu District are never going to be that interesting, but sometimes a group of kids can make even places like that memorable, boring though they might at first seem.

I would, however, recommend against the sixth grade graduation trips.  Those, in my opinion, are to be avoided at all costs.  Three days and two nights in Taipei with a bunch of restless 12 year olds?  No thank you, I'll just catch up on some work in the office!

I tried to interview my coworker about Jialan.  She happens to live in the area.  It was a fun conversation.

She didn't know the name of this mountain.  But then again, does it matter?

This road skirts the village of Jinfeng.  That's the Taimali River next to the road.

Further up the Taimali River is another village.  I asked my coworker what the Chinese name of this village is, but she wasn't sure.

I assume this represents a Paiwan brave?  I asked my coworker about it, and she said: "Uh... yeah, sure."

This mural is on the wall of the Jinfeng Township Office.  The man and the woman in the mural are holding a two-person ceremonial cup, with a bowl of avai (or "abai") at their feet.  Avai is a kind of millet tamale.

The same spot, looking in the other direction.  The statue in the foreground is millet and roselle flowers.  There are also millet and roselle flowers in the mural above.

This is further up the hill.

This is on a bridge near the same location.  The snakes on the urn are hundred pacers.  There are many, many indigenous stories about the hundred pace snake.

This is as far up as you can go in Jinfeng Village without being attacked by dogs.  There are a lot of dogs in Jinfeng, and all the cats look very tough.

I asked my coworker if the government built these houses, perhaps after Typhoon Morakot or some other typhoon ravaged the area.  She didn't know, but promised to get back to me about it.

"A," if you're reading this, I'm still waiting...

One of the local churches.  My coworker isn't a member of this congregation.  She's Catholic, and this one is Protestant.

Her parish has almost completed a new church, further down the hill.

A traditional Paiwan house?  "Yes," she says, "But I don't think anyone lives there now."

She says that one of the villagers built this house without owning all of the land on which it sits.  The person who had it built still lives there, but it's a precarious situation.

This, she says, is where the villagers hold their yearly harvest festival.  I asked her about the skulls, but she wasn't sure what they mean.

This observation platform is east of the village.  She says people leave a lot of trash here, and it's a headache to clean it all up.

The view from the observation platform.  This river valley can get SCARY when the Taimali River is flooding.  My coworker says they conduct regular flood drills to prepare for such an event, but many of the villagers are older, and don't worry much about the weather.

Portside Fun in Xingda and Yongan

The Chinese below was taken from "A New Appreciation of Fishing" 漁樂新視界.  This book was published by 財團法人台灣養殖魚業發展基金會 in 2012 and the English parts were written/translated by me.  There will be one more of these entries, covering the ports in Taitung that I didn't get to during the years I lived in Pingtung.

Portside Fun in Xingda [Port] and Yongan

Qieding is a traditional fishing village with a long history.  It's located in Kaohsiung.  Both its offshore fishing and its fish farming industries are well developed.  In recent years its Xingda Port has been renovated, and this has made Qieding an important marine tourism destination.  [A prime example of Qieding's popularity] is Xingda Port, a fun [spot] with delicious food.  Lover's Pier, [located in Xingda Port], is a great spot for lovers out for a stroll, or for families spending time together in the evenings.

Yongan is between Qieding and Mituo [districts], and boasts 6.8 kilometers of coastline.  This area was once a lagoon enclosed by sandbars, part of an inland sea formerly known as "Old Nao Port."  Yongan is an important area with regard to grouper farming, and it has been given the name "the grouper's hometown."  It's the area where large-scale grouper farming in Taiwan began.

How to go?

Exit the Zhongshan Freeway (#1) at the Luzhu interchange, and head west past the Tung Fang Design University to the end of the road.  Alternatively, you can take Highway 17 along the coast [straight to Xingda Port].  To get to Yongan you can also exit via the Luzhu interchange, or take Highway 17 along the coast.
A Beautiful Life

Lover's Pier in Xingda Port

Xingda Port was named one of the 10 most charming fishing ports in 2010.  Xingda Port is known for its romantic aura, and is located in Qieding District, on Qilou Bay, on Kaohsiung's most northern stretch of coastline.  It's now a multi-use tourist fishing port in the Greater Kaohsiung area.  In the daytime you can visit the European-style Lover's Pier, and stroll along its wooden boardwalk.  After sunset the lights of the port make for a truly romantic scene.  (2)

Xingda Port Tourist Fish Market

"The Xingda Port Tourist Fish Market" is located on Dafa Road and Minyou Road.  It was originally a traditional old street where the catch was brought to be sold at auction.  In this place fresh fish is auctioned and you can enjoy fresh seafood dishes.  The market opens at 3 pm daily, and is very busy around sunset on weekends.  Those who enjoy trying new things and want to join in the fun can come to see the famous "Fast Hands Fish Ball Show!" (3)

Qieding (Jiading) Wetlands

The Qieding Wetland is directly north of Xingda Fishing Port.  It's a huge inland coastal wetland which consists of a "inland freshwater wetland" formed by rainfall, and a "brackish [half saltwater] wetland" near the sea.  This wetland ecosystem changes along with rainfall patterns [throughout the year], and is an ideal spot for birdwatching.

Jinluan Temple

According to tradition, during the 48th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign a sailboat from Qianzhou [in Mainland China] was wrecked [off the coast] and caught fire soon after.  Those aboard the boat fled the disaster in a raft and escaped to Qieding.  The survivors later had a plaque inscribed, which bore the words "En Zhou Hai Yu" ["Thanks for the port in the storm"] as a way of expressing their gratitude [to the goddess].  Since most residents of Qieding make their living from fishing, the Heavenly Mother enshrined in the Jinluan Temple has become the center of worship for those living there.

Yongxin Fishing Port

Yongxin Fishing Port is a newly developed fishing port.  Its harbor can accommodate 200 fishing rafts and 30 fishing boats.  The primary catch [in this area] is mullet.  This port is not nearly as crowded as [Xingda Port], and instead offers a relaxing atmosphere.  Many avid fishermen come here for fishing expeditions [along the coast]. (5)

Yongan Wetlands

The "Yongan Wetland" formed on land previously used to dry salt.  This land was later silted over by the nearby harbor.  Water accumulates here every rainy season, and this prompted the development of a wetland nature park.  Aside from a mangrove ecosystem it's also a prime location for birdwatchers.  In 1999 this area was designated one of 53 important wild bird habitats by both Bird Life International and the Republic of China's Wild Bird Society.

Golden Mullet Roe

Xingda Fishing Port can be called Taiwan's most important mullet production and sales center.  Around winter solstice the mullet that arrive off the coast of Qieding are at their fattest, and the roe they carry is at its most mature.  For this reason [Qieding] is called "the mullet's hometown."  Those eager to try firm, fragrant and chewy mullet roe shouldn't overlook the "golden mullet roe" here!

Rouge Shrimp Sausage

This sausage is made with rouge shrimp, which are caught in the deep sea.  [This sausage] is a unique combination of shrimp and pork which is both delicious and not greasy.  You'll savor the seafood taste in every bite of this specialty sausage.  It's a specially promoted gift item from the Xingda Port Fishing Association.  When you visit the Qieding area don't forget to look for it! (4)

1. I wouldn't recommend Highway 17 if you're coming from far away.  It's a more scenic drive, but it gets a bit tricky around downtown Tainan, north Yongan and Zuoying in Kaohsiung.

Whatever you do, I strenuously recommend NOT taking Highway 1 between downtown Kaohsiung and Jiading/Yongan.  They're building the Kaohsiung MRT extension in that direction, and traffic is a nightmare.

2. This was more true years ago.  I visited Lover's Pier when it was newer, and there was a lot more to do there.  In 2025 I'd recommend skipping it altogether, and heading to the Tourist Fish Market on the other side of the port instead.  The view of the sunrise from the seawall is better anyway.

3. "Minyou Road" or 民有路 reads like a typo but it isn't.  It is the actual name for the actual road.  I was there recently and it wasn't even remotely busy.  Not sure about the "Fast Hands Fish Ball Show."  I saw no indication of it when I was there.

4. It may still be available there, or it may not be.  I can't eat shrimp so I wouldn't know.  Don't be surprised if you go up there and can't find it.  Sometimes the local merchants and fishing associations just give up on this kind of product.  There is a sustained demand for the mullet roe, but I don't know about the shrimp sausages.

5. It's no longer new by any stretch of the imagination.  On the contrary many of the local fishermen have been complaining that the place needs to be upgraded.  Having seen it for myself, yeah, I get why they're complaining.
